Two and a half weeks after returning from Texas, we hit I-20 headed west once again. This trip was not a music roadtrip, but a work-related one. As a telecommuter, I am used to not having f2f (face-to-face) contact with my co-workers; I’ve been working from home for the same company (modulo an acquisition) for 13.5 years now! However, it has been a couple of years since I sat in a windowless conference room with my colleagues, and I was in desperate need of some inspiration, motivation and enthusiasm. So, despite not really wanting to make a trip so soon after all our recent travels, the girls and I packed up and headed back to my parents’ house.

As with both directions on our previous trip, we stayed at the Fairfield Inn & Suites in Ruston, LA. The trip from GA to TX is one that we can make in one day, but for me to balance my work day and travel, I find it best to split the trip into two. The girls also find two shorter days in the car (not to mention Disney channel and a pool at the hotel) to be more pleasant. While I’ve generally been quite happy with the consistency and predictability of Fairfield, on our trip home from Texas we had been downgraded in room, and I was terribly unhappy about that…I spoke to the manager, and he offered a complimentary room on our next stay. Despite my not requesting he fulfill his promise, he did! Free room!

We’ve now been in Texas for about a week. I’ve attended meetings, used my IBM badge for the first time, driving a pickup truck. The girls have carded cotton and walked along San Antonio’s Riverwalk. Texas in the fall is really a great place to be!
