how did Halloween come and go so fast? Maybe it was the fact that we were out of town so many weekends in October? Maybe it was the fact that I’ve been sick with a cold/sinus infection for so many days now? I have no idea, but I really hope that next year we manage to make it a bit more special. Our homeschool and hamlet Halloween parties were both pretty special and I’m so glad to be a part of of both communities.

The girls designed their own costumes. Chloe wanted something a bit more conventional, since last year people told her she wasn’t in costume, when she really was. It wasn’t elaborate, but she was dressed up as a minor character in a Mario Bros. video game. This year she found a cat mask at Kroger that she thought was just perfect. She then searched around the house and found clothes to wear with it. At Target, she found a tail and ears to finish off her black cat costume.

Camille chose to be something that I don’t quite understand. She was a cat fairy. She found a fairy costume and combined it with black ears and a black tail.

Costumes
I understand the appeal in homemade costumes. I understand the ease of store-bought costumes. I don’t understand when costumes are so elaborate that the person wearing them can’t walk up and down stairs.

For me, the fact that my girls came up with their ideas this year and executed them on their own is pretty cool. They are turning into very independent people. I am a facilitator in their endeavors. I try not to take over and tell them what to do, sometimes better than other times. And to the person who told Camille yesterday that she’s too old to be trick-or-treating, I feel sorry for your kids.

Camille is certainly not too old for trick-or-treating. My house was filled with half a dozen 12 and 13 year old girls who all took part without objection from anyone. Camille is still in her trick-or-treating prime!
