This weekend was a rare gem in which I had almost no pressing tasks to get done. I could finally embark on my “long term” to do list of “fun learning” challenges for myself.

But it didn’t turn out to be so fun at first. I have this long range vision of mastering WordPress to the point where I can create my own templates from scratch instead of mucking around with the various php and css files that others have written. To teach myself, I bought a book, Smashing WordPress: Beyond the Blog, based on the reviews in amazon. I picked up the book with high hopes this weekend, but was quickly discouraged. I’m not yet sure if it is the book or if it is me, but I’m lost already. (I hope it is the book.)

So, I put the book down and went back to mucking with the template I have. And I spent some time with a drawing tool in order to create a new header. While I still have work to do on the sidebars and the colors, and I’m not thrilled that I didn’t get further with teaching myself WordPress, I am pretty pleased with what I did learn and with the results on my TravelGoon site.
