What are your favorite things to do in NYC?
What books or websites do you visit before you go?
What do you not like?
What tips do you have for friends planning to go?

Camille says: “I like American Girl. I think the Natural History Museum is pretty fun to go to. The Transit Muswum is awesome. I don’t like how dirty the subway is and how there’s a lot of people on it.”

Chloe says: “I like how fun it is in New York. I like the museums: Natural History Museum and the Transit Museum. I don’t like how busy the roads are.”

Update:
Here are some tips that came in from a similar “call for participation” on my facebook page:

  • When we were just there (but with no more time to fit it in) my SIL told me that there’s a free ferry between the Manhattan Ikea and the Brooklyn Ikea – goes right by the Statue of Liberty. She said you don’t even have to buy a thing to ride it, so unless you’re looking to actually get out, it’s a cool/cheap way to see the SoL up close.
  • The Sony Wonder lab is free for kids/adults…awesome technology and games…also free movies if you time it right!
  • The “new” Times Square ought to be worth walking around in if they won’t get neck strain.
  • The Museum of Natural History, Hayden Planetarium, MOMA, The Met, FAO Schwartz or TRU. Its been a while since I’ve been in the city, and we’ve never taken our kids. Those are places I’d take them though 😉
  • Chinatown (the non-Canal Street) esp. Grand Street (perpendicular to Canal) where you won’t know the language or most of the foods on the sidewalk nor the language. They’ll really feel like they’re in Asia.
The Lower Eastside Tenement museum is real living history, where as you tour the actual home of an actual NYC immigrant family of the past… Read More, the guide enthralls you with the real story of their lives. There’s an Italian, a Jewish and an Irish tenement tours to pick from, depending on schedule.
There’s a phenomenal off-broadway bubble show. It’s amazing what is created.

  • The UN is not to be missed. If I recall correctly the tour was free.Make sure you post a card to friends and yourself as it’s not a part of the USA!
  • Last summer we took the kids to Central Park and they loved the zoo, duck pond, and horse/carriage ride – if the weather is nice it’s fun to watch the “street performers” there too! Of course they also loved FAO and the American Girl Doll Store and they insist on eating at Mars 2112!
