A while back, I read an article about hiring a career coach. While I’m not in the market for a new career at the moment, the day may come that I need some help, and I’d like to be ready when it does.

The article, a bit short on useful information, wasn’t what really stuck with me. What stayed with me was the one comment (never read the comments). “Who would ever need a career coach? You go to high school, you go to college and pick a field of study, and you get a job. End of story.” Wow.

No room to grow. No room for the world to change. You picked it, you stick with it.

As people, we need to allow room for growth and change. And to search for new opportunities.

If my job goes away, will I still want to do what I do right now? Or will I be ready to try something new? What might that be? What’s out there that fits with, not what I studied 20 years ago, but with what I might enjoy and be able to excel at now? And why not hire someone who has made it their job to understand trends in the workforce, useful skillsets, and other issues involved in searching for a career?
