One of the goals/reasons for moving to Decatur was to give the girls more opportunities to be able to get places and do things on their own. Camille usually walks or walks home from homeschool classes (since it is two miles away, I usually drive her one way or the other). She goes to the library on her own. Chloe hasn’t done as much on her own yet other than coming back form the bus stop. Next year, they’ll both be able to walk to school on their own (or together, part of the way).

We chose to be near the square not only for the convenience of the library, post office, shops and restaurants, but also because of how close we are to MARTA. I admit, I’ve only ridden the train a handful of times since we’ve moved here … usually to the airport. Rob, however, takes the bus or train a few times a week. And now, at last, Camille has taken the train on her own! She wanted to go to a concert. Some of her friends were going with a trusted adult, but they couldn’t pick Camille up. So Camille rode the train to the venue on her own. (Rob did meet her at the other end — near work — to make sure she met up with her friends okay. And he also brought her home, since I don’t even feel very safe riding MARTA on my own late at night.

Her next step is to learn how to ride the bus on her own so she can meet friends at the movies…
