I admit, I haven’t looked into what IB (International Baccalaureate) means in terms of schooling despite the fact that Chloe’s school is an IB School. I have a vague notion that it is generally a good thing overall, but that also makes us go praise our kids more than I feel is necessary.

This week, I learned that there is an IB Learner Profile when Chloe informed me that her music teacher gave her a “Thinker” pin even though he wanted to give her an “Inquirer” pin, but he didn’t have one. From what Chloe says, her class as a whole needs to collect a set of ten for a “prize” (prize unknown).

As I asked Chloe more about what the traits are, I realized that she has all ten traits already. (Thankfully, they don’t ask for kids to not be whiny and not be PITAs.) But one that stand out? Principled. Holy cow, that girl knows the rules. She knows why there are rules. She has a bit of a meltdown when she learns she hasn’t followed the rules. And she makes us follow the rules. She’s uber-principled to the point of making us nuts sometimes.

Earlier today, we were at a corn maze. Corn mazes in mid-November are trampled. It is often impossible to tell with any certainty where the paths are and where the cut-thrus are. But Chloe insisted on us following only the paths. Even when she was tired and not feeling well. We were not allowed to cheat. Not even once.

Principled is she, but perhaps a bit too much so?
