When I first heard about the OneVoice Rocks! Festival, I knew the girls and I had to get there. Some of our favorite bands (SE rockers Lunch Money, Seattle’s Best Recess Monkey, hometown hero Robbie Schaefer) coming together? To play live music? For a great cause? Near where we love to be?
How could we miss it? And, of course, we didn’t miss it. Even the weather reversed course in order to make it all come together. We arrived at the venue in Gaithersburg, MD, a little early after having stopped to pick up a picnic dinner at the nearby Whole Foods. (An aside – yeah, Gaithersburg has changed a lot since we lived in Rockville oh so many years ago.) We greeted those who we knew and introduced ourselves to those whom we did not (Hi Molly’s Mom! Thought of you as I took I-81/77 home!)
The girls settled into their dinner and the activities, despite the high humidity and the (ewwww…) bugs flying up noses. I chose to entertain myself with the simplest of things, the soundcheck. The weather turned ugly. Beach balls were blowing out of the venue, down the sidewalk and into the street. Chloe tried to rescue them all, but Mayor Monkey had a brilliant idea of corralling the balls to keep them from escaping again. Whew. Thank goodness for MayMo!
The rain stopped, the people came, the humidity and heat increased, but at least the bugs started to disappear. It was a lovely evening, seeing kids meet their “stars” for the first time. Hanging out with many kindie friends. Seeing kids go about doing their own things. Listening to some very awesome music. And, last but not least, donating to a very worthy cause. Haven’t heard about Robbie Schaefer’s OneVoice project? Really, a great idea and deserves all the support it can get. We’ve donated in the past, but I again made a small donation and was given a large bag of a special coffee that I can’t wait to try….
I am so happy that people came out despite the roller coaster weather and contributed to this great cause!
