Every Day is Earth Day

right?

I was not too surprised at some of the backlash that I saw to Earth Day. No, these are not people that hate the earth, these are the ones that love it and think that *every day* should be Earth Day, so they don’t want to do anything special.

There’s a little more to it than that, in my mind. Yes, asking people and business to conserve on one special day is quite silly. Everyone should do their part to conserve every day.

However, I believe that everyone who cares about the environment should participate in Earth Day in one way or another. With so many outlets discussing and celebrating Earth Day, it should be exploited as a wonderful day to evangelize. More people can be reached and new ideas can form. If just a few people make a vow to change one or two things about how they live, then the spark will flow.

Our family works at finding new ways to be more green, and “Earth Day” is a great time to teach us something new. Canvas bags are the norm — I am forever saying “I don’t need a bag.” I’ve been doing this for 9(?) years now, and more and more people are catching on to how easy it is to make this change. Recycling – we were the first on our block in the old house to buy a recycling bin. Now every house has one. How exciting is that? Composting – not sure how well this is picking up, but we’ve been doing it for 8 years or so now. Buckets in the showers collect water for watering the plants….so easy to do, but maybe overlooked until pointed out. But I know there are more ideas, and with all the buzz on Earth Day, each of us can resolve to find more ways to conserve that we will not just use once on Earth Day, but every day!
