PLamingo Parade – 5 oct 2008

A few months ago, Uncle Jeff posted a bunch of photos from a flamingo parade. People took the iconic pink plastic creatures and decorated them. I thought this sounded like a great fundraiser for our eclectic little city. I search for a place to buy these guys in bulk, but apparently the original company had stopped making them. I found another place that would sell them in bulk and ordered 100 flamingos.

The weekend at our Lakefest, we held the PLamingo Parade and auctioned off the decorated flamingos in order to raise money for the playground. After all my driving, I was a bit out of sorts, but the parade went well and we did end up raising a nice bit of money. I still have three boxes of flamingos in my garage. Anyone care to buy some and decorate them?

How creative! Did you buy one? Decorate one? What was your favorite?

We were going to decorate one, but our travel schedule interfered. The girls did do some decorating at the “decorating table”, but they were simple kid-style decorations.

We bought a couple — I let the girls bid on one each. We got a fancy bride on and another glittery, colorful one. Can’t say I had a favorite — they were all lots of fun. Obamingo to the “Flaming flamingos” FUN!

I loved the story from one of the vendors. She said she had gotten in trouble from her homeowner’s association in an unnamed northern suburb of the city because of a pink flamingo in her *back* yard. She bought the orange Halloween one because 1) it would not be covered by the neighborhood covenant and 2) it was a legitimate Halloween decoration.

Her backyard? Sheesh. I love the eccentricity and eclectic vibe of our little village oh so very much!
