Google welcomed the latest addition to its family yesterday, Google Chrome. It is purported to be:

a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier.

.

Generally, my working habits are slow to evolve when faced with a new technology. I fight against the new features for some time before finally seeing the light. One day is not enough time for me to be able to present what benefits this new broswer may possess. (See Google for their spiel.) But I have become quickly aware of things I perceive to be shortcomings. The new browser is still in beta, so I would hope some of the items below will be improved for the release.

  • Multiple logins are handled poorly. I prefer the firefox way. For example, we have three library card numbers that we use. Each number is 16 or so digits long and the first oh say 8 are the same. I don’t want to have to remember anything but the leading digit, then chose from a list of memorized logins.
  • Facebook and Chrome don’t mix. I can’t comment or “become a fan” without switching back to firefox.
  • I don’t see how to easily get to my homepage (that would be iGoogle, of course) or that neat new start page that Google has created. I don’t want to open a new page to get the “New Tab page”, I want it to appear in my current page.
  • when I installed Chrome, it imported my outdated IE bookmarks (I didn’t notice that I could change the settings until too late). I then imported my firefox bookmarks, and they came in a sublevel of the bookmarks instead of on my link toolbar. So I uninstalled and reinstalled, changing the settings, and still no dice. I had to rearrange my links by hand.

    Addendum:

  • When I view page source, it comes up in a tab. I so like the way IE gives me the text file so I can easily edit my “hand-written” webpages. But maybe I am the only person left in the world to write straight html “by hand”.
  • I can’t get Rob’s MobileMe Gallery to load.
