Our family is one of computer freaks. My folks met at IBM in the 60s. I have a doctorate in Computational and Applied Mathematics and work for a software company. Rob is an engineer that uses computers excessively in his research. Rob’s brother is also a computer guru, with a doctorate comparable to mine and now running and maintaining complex systems. So why should it come as any surprise to hear Camille ask me today if she could learn java. Sure, let’s get a book. She informs me she already has one (from her grandmother who is a computer science professor, of course).

So Camille read the intro chapters, got out the computer, downloaded Eclipse and then wrote her first Java program. She came to realize that spelling, letter case and spacing are not nontrivial…but she managed to get a currency converter running in very little time.

As for me, I’m tired, but hey, I actually made sure the kids had three meals today! Moreover, we made it to Home Depot to buy some plants — now only to get them in the ground. Our Target seeds were not germinating, so we went to get some starter plants — basil, tomatoes, zucchini, and more. We got home, and guess what, some of those Target seeds were sprouting! Score!

I still managed to work about ten hours today. That’s a lot considering I’ve now worked 27 hours this week (as of Tuesday), and my “standard” is a 20 hour work week. I look forward to next week’s relative slowness.
