but I also live in a big city.
While I love living in a small town (today I pulled up next to a friend at a red light and rolled down my window to wish her a happy birthday — small town), but I also live in a big city.
This was not the big city I dreamed of living in. Growing up in New York, I always imagined I’d live in the Northeast. I knew nothing about the south. Nothing. When we ended up in Atlanta in 1999, I was so busy with work and being a new mom that I really didn’t think much about it. Through the years, we found our happy places and our communities. I still have always thought of Atlanta as a wannabe city. Mediocre arts, lacking public transit, no “big city” vibe.
Tonight, Camille and I hoped on the train – a block from our house and took a 15 minute ride to downtown. Where we found ourselves in a vibrant downtown area. A few blocks away we arrived at the theater. And saw a great play. And took Uber home.
We live in a city! A real city. Too hot in the summer. But it is a city nonetheless.
