renfesting
This year, we returned to the Georgia Renaissance Festival, both girls proudly wearing the cloaks they had acquired when we attended the festival in 2008 (read more in Ahoy There Matey) .
While I have no desire to go to Dragon*Con (another excuse for grownups to dress-up, be silly and have fun), I do like RenFest. It’s not the food that attracts me — meat on a stick is really not appealing to a vegetarian nor is “Fryed macaroni and cheese” (vegetarian, assuming it isn’t “fryed” in lard).
I do enjoy the family-friendly, adults having fun atmosphere of the festival. Role-playing adults are having a grand time, without going for the “shock” value. I appreciate the balance. I want my kids to grow up knowing that it is okay to pretend and to have fun, without having to be “weird”. The girls had fun being led around the maypole by costumed adults and watching others have sword fights.
I love the human-powered rides. Potentially dangerous, but, when used with common sense, safe and fun.
I love the artist booths. The artisan quality of the items appeals greatly to me, and I have a hard time holding myself back from buying everything that catches my eye.
I love watching Chloe watch the gymnast-type folks, such as the slit-wearing, jugging, trapeze artist.
Hot as it may be, food as gross as it may be, we did have a fun day out together as a family. And look forward to next year’s festival. The girls are already planning their outfits.
