It was a bit of a last-minute get-together, and it’s been 35 years, but it felt like hardly a day had passed. My high school prom date was in the U.S. from Australia, visiting friends in Boston and Providence, and we managed to arrange for him and his fiancée to spend a night with us here at the very end of Cape Cod.
It was wonderful to catch up after so long—to talk, laugh, and fill in the years—but what surprised me most was how familiar it all felt. Somehow, despite the decades in between, it was almost as if no time had passed at all.
