Today is National Fried Scallops Day and Lee National Denim Day and National Diversity Day.
Foggy in Amsterdam, so our landing was a little delayed. I moved fast through immigration to get to the gate for my flight to Nice, which was cancelled soon after I got to the gate. I headed to “Transfer 2” to get rebooked. In the time I waited to try the “self-rebook”, which didn’t work, the line for talking to an agent had grown from none to three hours long – while in line I tweeted to KLM (responded much later) and Delta (responded right away but could not help as KLM had to manage it). After an hour in line, an agent suggested that I of to “Transfer 6”, which meant “leaving” the Schengen area. My shortest trip to the EU ever! I got in another line and got a number. While waiting an hour for number to be called, I was automatically rebooked. I only discovered this when I checked my Delta app. But rebooked to leave Schipol at 4pm to London! London! I spent my time in Schipol trying to rest, rearrange plans, and get lunch. The flight to London was cool – the sky was clear and even from my middle seat, I got a view of London! The kid next to me was friendly and interesting as well. At Heathrow, I transferred terminals via bus, went through some sort of passport control, had to manage security (a little complicated), bought a few gifts, then ran to my gate when it came up on the board. The only empty seat on the plane was the window seat next to me, so I moved over and took a little nap after watching the sunset. In Nice, I entered back into Schengen then headed out to meet Shirley who had very nicely volunteered to come to the airport to meet me and take me to the hotel as the buses to Cannes had stopped running earlier. It was pouring at the airport, but had stopped by the time we got to Cannes. I got checked into to the hotel (Hotel Colette) and noticed a wheel had fallen off my suitcase. It made it through all the crazy of the day and fell apart on the way to the hotel! I settled in, showered, took care of various things, and went to bed at last.
