atlanta: waffle house museum
A month of being at home is causing me to develop a serious case of cabin fever. I’ve been able to clear out some long standing to-do items, volunteer at various events, and relax a bit, but the idea of spending another weekend at home checking things of my list was dragging me down. While we had too much going on to make an escape, I insisted that we get out of the house and do a few new things. Before we got to the “big event”, we had ourselves a nice Atlanta morning.
For Saturday breakfast, instead of heading to one of the many places in walking distance to our condo, we hoped int he car to head to the Flying Biscuit. An Atlanta institution I’d never been to. We all had a delicious breakfast!
From there, we headed to the Freedom Park Farmers Market. Again, there is a farmers market right here in Decatur, but we all seem to like the Freedom Park one a whole lot more. Camille needed to pick up a comic book, so we thought we’d swing by Criminal Records in Little Five Points. Instead, we stumbled into a festival on Euclid. Not having a giant list of things to get done, it was nice to just relax into the day and take our time just being there.
Finally, we made it to the Waffle House Museum, located at Waffle House #1, just down the street from us. We driven by a thousand times and have always wanted to go in. Unfortunately, the museum only opens its doors for a few hours about once every three months, and we’ve never seemed to be able to remember to check and then go when it is open.
When we arrived, the food truck was parked out front, giving out free waffles. Inside, we could sit at the counter and eat our waffle, listen to people tell the story of Waffle House and actually go behind the counter to serve up “food”. While we’re not sure about their claim to be serving “healthy food”, it was interesting to learn about the structure and growth of the company.
Now if only they’d serve decent coffee. And get around to opening their location on the Decatur Square.
