photo friday: heading to the palace of knossos – crete
What a whirlwind trip getting to Crete. Flight from Atlanta to Paris. Less than an hour to change in Paris, including immigration and customs. A quick (yet nice) flight to Athens. A public bus (X96) from the airport to Piraeus. A confusing meander around the docks. And then finally onto the overnight ferry.
We quickly disembarked and began our short (1km) walk to the hotel. As we arrived at 7am or so, our room was not ready yet. We left off our bags and got some advice on getting to Knossos. We walked halfway back to the port and grabbed Bus 2, headed to Knossos. As we had already walked by, we had a good idea of where to go; the signage was good and the fare reasonable. Getting a ride through Heraklion on the bus was actually a great introduction to this walled city – in many ways it reminded me of cities in the south of France. In Knossos, we decided to settle in and enjoy breakfast – the restaurant we chose, Minotavros, was perfect. We had the upstairs dining room to ourselves. The view was of the lovely Cretan countryside. We could hear birds. There was free wi-fi. Our server was friendly and happy to help us. We had delicious coffee, fresh squeezed juice, eggs and toast. We weren’t rushed. We took our time, took it all in and enjoyed just being there.
Despite the hectic traveling we did to arrive at Knossos, our final approach was easy and relaxed.
