Georgia: Etowah Indian Mounds, Take 2
When Camille and I were at Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site a few weeks ago, we spotted a notice for an upcoming Saturday event full of activities. Since I wanted to get the cabin, but we couldn’t leave on Friday due to Chloe’s school picnic, we decided to return and bring Chloe along.
The sun was up and burning down on us by the time we arrived, unfortunately. Thankfully, the man making arrowheads was sitting in the shade. We enjoyed watching him a bit (though I had been under the apparent mistaken impression that the “learning” was going to be hands-on). Nearby was an “archaeological dig”. Chloe could have stay there all day digging for plastic beads and other “finds”. Eventually, I got her to move on with the promise of pottery making down by the river. As we headed to the river, Chloe opted to skip climbing to the top of the large mound because of the heat.
Both girls enjoyed working with the clay to make bowls — Chloe eventually made a clay ball. The volunteers were super friendly. One of them, a young woman, clearly had a degree in archaeology and was excited to talk about pottery, the indians of the area and lots more.
After the girls were done making their bowls, we walked the long way back to the visitors center.
