Georgia: Fort Mountain Wall
The girls and I headed up to Blue Ridge a couple of weeks ago to spend a little time at the cabin. While there we decided to take the time to visit a few of the places from our list of native cultures in Georgia.
After a series of false starts and a little comedy of errors, we headed out to Fort Mountain State Park VERY EARLY. The weekend was the hottest ever, with temps heading into the triple digits, and not a great time to go on hikes, even small ones. Using our pass yet again, we entered the park for free. (What a bargain!)
Driving up to the CCC Tower/overlook/Wall trailheads, we read the historical marker and took off up a never-ending flight of stairs up to the ancient wall. While there are many theories about who built the wall and why, there seems to be no consensus, but only lots of plausible (and far-fetched) stories about the reasons the wall was created. For instance, this bizarre legend.
From there, we continued up to the CCC tower and then down to the overlook. By then the day was heating up, so we found the shortest path back to the car and drove down to the lake beach for a couple hours of swimming.
