red poppy festival
last night, after our adventure filled drive and dinner at my parents’ house, we ventured out, 7 of us packed in my mom’s car, to the square for the Red Poppy Festival. My first remark was that Georgetown has changed dramatically in the past 20 years. People were sitting, on the courthouse lawn, with glasses of wine in their hands! Wine! Open containers! On pubic property! When my parents first moved here, the county was dry. The only way to get a drink in a restaurant was to join a “club” for $5.
We waited and waited for the show to start, but the foul weather had thrown off the schedule. The girls and I were getting more tired by the second. By the time Rotel and the Hot Tomatoes started performing, we were too tired to be amusingly entertained.
This morning, after a night’s sleep and some catching up, we headed back downtown for the parade. complete with ladies carrying decorated plungers and old folks carrying lawn chairs. Oh, and 100 Corvettes, too.
The artist tents were plentiful, but for the most part, I felt like I had seen it all before. The girls, Chloe in particular, were tempted by everything they saw, from puppies to barrettes. Chloe stood in line for two different “inflatable” rides in the kids’ area. I stood in line at the ATM. (The water and inflatables were free, however.)
We headed home, thinking we might head back later to see The Biscuit Brothers but decided to stay at home and have a quiet afternoon, getting ready to tackle our Turkey travel plans.
