The Nutcracker
At Christmastime in the past, Rob has taken Camille, then both girls to go see The Nutcracker at the Atlanta Ballet. This year, I read an article in The Washington Post about The Nutcracker at the Kennedy Center and thought that sounded like lots of fun! Rob found out that The Nutcracker there was sold out, but that the Washington Ballet’s performance at the Warner Theater had plenty of tickets available.
On Sunday after the girls and I landed, we went to The Warner Theater and bought four tickets for Tuesday night. Easy, and minimal processing fees. Tuesday evening, we started to get ready to go at about 5:30. We couldn’t find Chloe’s tights. Then the girls kept refusing to wear the two parts of their coats. Or their hats. Or their scarves. Or their gloves. Ugh.
Finally, we got out the door, and it wasn’t too cold. But when we got off Metro at Federal Triangle, it was raining. And they were glad to have their coats. And hats. And boots. Except that Camille decided she wanted to get as wet as possible. On her way to the theater. Aiy!
The crowd in the lobby was a nightmare. People were waiting for their friends, but not wanting to get wet (who can blame them?). We found our way to get a snack. And then navigated the bar for drinks. No lid for the soda cup. Bad move.
When we got upstairs, there was no one at that bar … oh well. It took lots of manuevering for us to get in our seats and get off the winter outerwear while holding our drinks. But then we were settled. And the show started. Both girls loved the ballet. But mot especially the whirling, colorful, funny parts with the kids. When pairs would dance more formal dances, Chloe would get quite fidgety.
After the show, it was pouring as we walked to the station. But the lights were pretty and it was fun to be a part of the city at that point. I’m glad I didn’t bring my camera — one more thing to lug and protect from the rain, but I do wish my iPhone photos were better.

Oh, how fun! I did ballet as a child, and used to do something like 6 performances every December. Loved it. Sounds like a great time, logistics and the crowd aside.
The logistics were really just funny, not too terrible. It felt like one of the puzzles where you have to move piece to make room to move another, etc.
The kids on stage seemed to love being on stage. Very fun!
