road trip!
3:30am. that’s when I got up and turned on the coffee pot. Of course, I forgot to do a couple things I meant to do, but the girls and I were on the road by 4am. That got us up to Virginia by just after 11am: and then checked into a hotel, a shopping trip
making lists
As our year of having an apartment in DC is coming to a close, I’m working on my list of the things I WON’T miss. Then maybe I won’t feel so sad about no having a place in DC. I won’t miss: the desk lamp that is masquerading as a bedside lamp and which burns
Getting Around DC
As I wrote in the post Subway versus Metro, I love the DC Metro for getting around. In addition, the metro buses are fairly easy, and the DC Circulator buses are excellent for tourists! All three take “SmarTrip” Cards, which we have found to be extremely useful, especially if doing train/bus transfers. The WMATA website
Web Wednesday: DC Travel Sites
Where are the best bathrooms in DC? What’s a good place to get lunch (not the Air and Space Museum)? What time of day should we visit the archives? All of these questions and more are answered in the DC Like A Local blog. I have found it to be a wonderful resource this year
National Museum of Natural History Photos
Photos from the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History:
Night At The Museum
On Thursday, after we left XM following the Randy Kaplan concert, the girls and I returned to the National Museum of Natural History. Each time we go, we find something, new to look at. This trip, we stumbled on a hidden hallway with butterfly specimens! Our main reason for going to NMNH, however, was to
NYC Subway versus DC Metro
As I wrote a couple times before, we took the train from DC to NYC for the weekend earlier this month. Riding the subway, metro and Amtrak all on the same day was quite the experience. As we rode the metro (DC) from Union Station back to the apartment, it quickly filled with a huge
Europe in one day
A few weeks ago, we were fortunate enough to travel to Latvia, Spain, Germany, France, and Luxembourg … thanks to the third annual European Union Open House Day. We started out one block from our apartment, at the EU Delegation offices. I had always wanted to go inside, and was happy for the chance! A
art lessons
By the time Camille was “this many,” she knew her impressionists. She could tell a van Gogh from a Monet. She had been to Giverny and stood on Monet’s bridge. Chloe suffers from second child syndrome. We have not exposed her nearly enough to our favorite art, poor thing. A couple of weeks ago when
DC LIke A Local
Okay, I’m no DC local. And I have not seen nearly all that DC has to offer. But I have found a blog called, obviously enough, DC Like A Local. Not only have I agreed with a lot of the advice provided, but I have also found useful tidbits of information from the posts. Things
Around DC
Besides going to the White House Easter Egg Roll and taking the bus to Vienna to see a kids’ show (more on that coming soon), we’ve also taken in a few more of the sites of DC. I’m in the midst of a documentation release and the weather has been not so nice, so we
White House Easter Egg Roll
Not long after the sun rose, we started down Pennsylvania Ave towards the White House, stopping for coffee and muffins along the way. We joined the throngs of families and headed towards the entrance gate and security check. It looked exactly like entering the Austin City Limits Festival, except that we had to go through
Easter Egg Roll
We are so excited! I spent most of the day reloading a web page. That’s not exciting. But that obsessive task led to the acquisition of four tickets to the White House Easter Egg Roll. We get to go to the White House! And hear music! And participate in fun events! But mostly, we are
National Building Museum
A new day, a new DC museum! Today we headed out to the National Building Museum. I’d been a long time ago and heard that kids enjoy it, so we decided to give it a try. As we entered, we were greeted with the pandemonium of the preparation for a big gala, the March dinner
Play Ball!
On this the first day of spring, the girls and I headed out to see what signs we could spot. The weather could not decide if it was still winter or time to be spring. One minute the sun was shining and the wind was quiet, then the clouds would blow over and the wind
Books, Books Everywhere
But not a page to read. On Monday afternoon, after returning from Baltimore, we headed out to the Library of Congress to take a tour and learn more about what’s there. We also planned to meet my grad school officemate and his family. As we walked to to the Jefferson Building from the metro stop,
City Saturday
We headed out around 8am this morning and stopped at the bagel place to get some breakfast. Only one guy was doing everything, so it took us quite some time to get out. By the time we walked the two blocks to the bus stop, it was just about time for the bus to come,
Lincoln’s 200th Birthday
Thursday Feb 12th was Lincoln’s 200th Birthday. After we left XM, we decided to get off th train at Metro Center and visit Ford’s Theatre. I had read that they were holding various celebrations there, including the grand re-opening of the theater after renovations. I was surprised at the lack of a crowd! We walked
The Streets of DC -Tuesday Edition
Despite my sister’s desire for us to go to bed early and get up early and get to The Mall early for optimal vieweng, we all slept in and didn’t leave until 9am. Good thing to, as we would have been even more frozen than we were had we left earlier. Chloe was whiny and
The Streets of DC – Monday Edition
My folks, my sister and I spent about six hours on the streets of DC today. Again the mood was upbeat, even as places started to get more and more crowded. There were protesters at both Dupont Circle and in Lafayette Park throwing shoes at various images of Bush, including a very huge inflatable one
