Ireland Trip: Day 4
I woke a little after 5am and read for a few hours. Around 8, I tried getting the girls up. Barbara and I walked down to the harbor to look for a geocache. A little after 10am, we finally were all packed up and ready to head back to Galway. Our first stop was only
Ireland Trip: Day 3
After having stayed up past 2am, I couldn’t get up at 5am despite waking then. Instead, I forced myself to try to sleep past 8am. I then got up, despite not feeling totally rested. After taking care of a few things and then waking the rest of the family, we had some cereal for breakfast.
Ireland Trip: Day 2
Though I was up early (5:30), the rest of the family slept in a bit, some more than others. After some preparation and packing we hit the road a bit after 10am. After a few missed turns, we were finally on the road out of town. No real motorway as we headed north, mostly just
Ireland Trip: Day 1
As we boarded the plane in JFK, it was already the next day in Ireland. The sun was up before we knew it as the plane crossed the Atlantic. A quick breakfast and a quicker cup of coffee, and we then we landed at Shannon. We quickly made it through immigration and customs and out
Ireland Trip: Day 0
Zoom Zoom Zoom. In the end we decided to travel carry-on only, so the girls and I wheeled our bags out the door and across the street to MARTA. After getting no help from the Delta ticket agents about printing our boarding passes for the JFK to Shannon part of the journey, we headed to

photo friday: buildings in amsterdam
And for the final Photo Friday from Amsterdam — now over six months since we returned from our trip — I focus on the the tall, narrow buildings that line the streets and canals. While most have a similar form, each is unique. The result is a lovely one!
photo friday: canals in amsterdam
It’s so hard to envision the canals of Amsterdam if you’ve never seen them for yourself. The idea that bikes, boats, cars and pedestrians can navigate the city and that people live in boats is a bit hard to really get a good feeling for from afar!
photo friday: bikes in amsterdam
What do you think of when you think of Amsterdam? For me, the second thing after canals is bikes. Bikes, bikes, bikes. And after our short visit, my girls now think the same. “Look at all the bikes…just like Amsterdam!” (in reference to bike commuting in DC which, while, growing does not rival Amsterdam).
photo friday: amsterdam signs
Visiting a foreign place where another language is spoken, the signs are always a source of amusement. What do they mean? What are we supposed to learn to do or not do? And even the ones in English can be fun to look at when they are so different from what we are used to

On a conference call, so long ago, a coworker mentioned that airlines will allow for a lyover of less than 24 hours without added cost. As we worked to use our miles to book tickets to Greece, this fact crept into my mind. Where would we connect through (Delta doesn’t fly direct to Athens). Paris?
photo friday: santorini buses
Santorini, while small, is too big to get around on foot, so we learned quickly how to use the buses. From what we could tell, all routes ran through the main town, Thira. To get from one city to another, the general route was to take a bus to Thira and then a second bus
photo friday: kamari, santorini
When planning our trip to Santorini, I had no idea where to stay. What would work well for me and the girls? What would be convenient to the ferry and the sites we wanted to see? After much searching, I settled on Kamari. Located on the water and not too remote. Unfortunately, I hadn’t considered
photo friday: thira, santorini
After our surprise stop in Pyrgos, we finally arrived in Thira. Thira is a bigger caldera town than Oia, and all we really wanted was some dinner and maybe to see a bit of the sunset before getting on the last bus back to Kamari. We were tired from our long tourist day and weren’t
photo friday: pyrgos, santorini
As I mentioned in photo friday: akrotiri and red beach, we got hot on our hike back from the beach, so we got some drinks to cool off. Unfortunately, those drinks ended up causing a minor emergency which led to an unexpected adventure… As we waited for the bus from Akrotiri back the the “bus

Santorini – for such a small island there were so many things to do, and we couldn’t get them all in during our short stay. With Camille’s love for all things ancient, I decided that a trip to Akrotiri would be an excellent choice. The active archaeological dig is also a museum where visitors get
photo friday: oia, santorini
On our first full day in Santorini, the girls and I tackled the local bus system in order to make our way over to Oia, one of the “caldera” cities. Despite the heat, we had a wonderful time exploring all the windy streets. Our favorite discovrey was Atlantis Books! We also enjoyed a relaxing late
photo friday: hotel matina on santorini
One of my “big” wishes – bucket list and all that – for our trip to Greece (other than Knosssos) was to get to Santorini. From all I had seen and heard, it is a magical place and not to be missed. After much juggling of our schedule, we managed to make a trip to
photo friday: “modern” athens
While we mostly concentrated on seeing the “ancient” side of Athens in our short time there, we did manage to see some of the modern side. Unfortunately, that included protests and a car bomb near our hotel.

As tourists, it isn’t only the tourist attractions that attract us, but things that are not familiar too!
