Around DC
Besides going to the White House Easter Egg Roll and taking the bus to Vienna to see a kids’ show (more on that coming soon), we’ve also taken in a few more of the sites of DC. I’m in the midst of a documentation release and the weather has been not so nice, so we
White House Easter Egg Roll
Not long after the sun rose, we started down Pennsylvania Ave towards the White House, stopping for coffee and muffins along the way. We joined the throngs of families and headed towards the entrance gate and security check. It looked exactly like entering the Austin City Limits Festival, except that we had to go through
wildflowers
On Tuesday, after we dropped Jim and Marty off at the airport, Barbara, the girls and I headed off to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. While the wildflowers weren’t as numerous as I remembered in the past, it was such a nice place to be! We wandered around the gardens, then the woods and
Capital 10K
On Sunday, we woke early and headed down to Austin. Barbara, Phil, Jim and Marty were planning to walk, Suze and Luis to run, the girls and I to drink coffee and cheer them all on. (In the end, Jim chose to run.) It was FREEZING early, so as the race started, I ended with
Happy Birthday, Grandma!
On Saturday, the girls and I got up early and headed to the airport in the rain for our 8:40 flight. The weather was bad, but not bad enough to delay the flight. The plane was tiny, so Camille had to sit in the row ahead of Chloe and me. There was a medical emergency
Easter Egg Roll
We are so excited! I spent most of the day reloading a web page. That’s not exciting. But that obsessive task led to the acquisition of four tickets to the White House Easter Egg Roll. We get to go to the White House! And hear music! And participate in fun events! But mostly, we are
National Building Museum
A new day, a new DC museum! Today we headed out to the National Building Museum. I’d been a long time ago and heard that kids enjoy it, so we decided to give it a try. As we entered, we were greeted with the pandemonium of the preparation for a big gala, the March dinner
Please Touch!
After we left Independence National Historic Park on Sunday, we walked west along Market street. It’s a busy street of stores and indoor malls, not as appealing as the streets we walked on the day before. However, we stopped in at the Reading Terminal Market, which was a really cool market. We left there, heading
Independence
After swimming, packing, breakfast and checking out, we walked over to Independence National Historic Park. We first went into the area around Independence Hall. We didn’t have tickets to go into the hall itself, but we went into one of the other halls where we saw some information about the various documents that had been
The Franklin Institute
After attending the midday concert at World Cafe Live, we headed out to walk to The Franklin Institute. It was a nice walk, and fun to see the Phill train station from outside for a change (we’ve been through it on a train many times). The Institute was full of great rooms of wonderfully fun
Play Ball!
On this the first day of spring, the girls and I headed out to see what signs we could spot. The weather could not decide if it was still winter or time to be spring. One minute the sun was shining and the wind was quiet, then the clouds would blow over and the wind
Exploring the Coast
After my computer died Monday morning, we headed out down the coast to visit Pawley’s Island. At Pawley’s Island, we found the parking lot and headed out to the beach. We made sandwiches, complete with real sand. Chloe huddled under a beach towel to stay warm while Camille played. Chloe decided that it really wasn’t
At the Beach
I don’t know why, but last month I just felt like I needed to get to the beach. The endless sky, endless ocean meeting at the horizon was something that I was in need of. I had thought of going to Mexico or Key West, but decided it would be better to stay much closer
Books, Books Everywhere
But not a page to read. On Monday afternoon, after returning from Baltimore, we headed out to the Library of Congress to take a tour and learn more about what’s there. We also planned to meet my grad school officemate and his family. As we walked to to the Jefferson Building from the metro stop,
Sunday in Baltimore
Our ZipCar reservation started at 10:30, so we had a little bit of time his morning to get breakfast and get packed for our overnight trip to Baltimore. We ended up with a bright red Jetta, that the girls just loved! On the way to Baltimore, we stopped at Target to get (yet another) swimsuit
City Saturday
We headed out around 8am this morning and stopped at the bagel place to get some breakfast. Only one guy was doing everything, so it took us quite some time to get out. By the time we walked the two blocks to the bus stop, it was just about time for the bus to come,
Lincoln’s 200th Birthday
Thursday Feb 12th was Lincoln’s 200th Birthday. After we left XM, we decided to get off th train at Metro Center and visit Ford’s Theatre. I had read that they were holding various celebrations there, including the grand re-opening of the theater after renovations. I was surprised at the lack of a crowd! We walked
History Center
Yesterday, I managed to get enough done early enough that we headed out to the homeschool day at the Atlanta History Center. The kids were pretty excited; they love to go there. Unfortunately, the traffic was an absolute nightmare. A funeral in the middle of the highway kept all traffic at 40mph for 10 miles.
The Streets of DC -Tuesday Edition
Despite my sister’s desire for us to go to bed early and get up early and get to The Mall early for optimal vieweng, we all slept in and didn’t leave until 9am. Good thing to, as we would have been even more frozen than we were had we left earlier. Chloe was whiny and
The Streets of DC – Monday Edition
My folks, my sister and I spent about six hours on the streets of DC today. Again the mood was upbeat, even as places started to get more and more crowded. There were protesters at both Dupont Circle and in Lafayette Park throwing shoes at various images of Bush, including a very huge inflatable one
