meals … once again
In our move, I fell out of any menu-creating practice that I had gotten into. We were back to that horrible state of it being 6 or 7pm and none of us having any idea on what to make for dinner. Then that would turn into run to the store for something and quick, easy

The girls and I went out to Swirlin’ Twirlin’ for “Irish Mint” frozen yogurt and then wandered around the square in order to see what was happening. So many people were out that we almost felt like we were on Bourbon Street, not Ponce!!
Chloe’s Reviews: Ted’s Montana Grill
We ventured down to Ted’s Montana Grill on the ground floor of our building for the first time, and here’s what Chloe had to say about it: Service is friendly. The root beer float is good. The macaroni is okay. We could come back again. That bison is freaking me out.
rise from the ashes?
Whenever we head up to Blue Ridge, Chloe begs to go to the “Toccoaside”, the Toccoa Riverside Restaurant just down the street form the cabin. Unfortunately, her favorite restaurant was destroyed by fire a few weeks ago. Chloe was devastated to hear this sad news. This weekend while we were in Blue Ridge, we drove
camille’s cake – 26 sep 2011
Camille celebrated her thirteenth birthday today! Claire came to the store to help us pick out dinner and a cake — Camille decided on an oreo ice-cream cake, in the end! We had a nice evening, celebrating and watching Doctor Who…
baking – 10 sep 2011
Camille *loves* to bake. And she’s taken to that fancy new mixer we bought, too. Her cookies are too delicious to pass on.
samosas – 9 sep 2011
We are working hard to use up leftovers before they expire. Sometimes it can be a challenge … we have three or four containers of lentil daal in the fridge at the moment, so I had the idea of turning them into “samosas” for lunch today.
CSA: Four days later
My Happiness Project topic for August is Cooking. As I wrote last week, I’ve cleaned out the cabinets, organized the grains and spices and bought some new and replacement tools for the kitchen. I still have a few more things to buy — like a magnetic knife rack, but I’m on track to actually start
tomatoes – 20 aug 2011
These traffic-light tomatoes were part of our CSA share. I’ve made tomato sauce and salsa and also eaten them raw. Yum!
Happiness Project: August – Cooking
As I still work on my July portion of my happiness project, Energy, it is now August and time to take on a new challenge. I’ve done fairly well with the “Energy” project; I’ve gained enough energy to really reduce my to-do list and keep up with other things too. But, I’m still not there,
Photo Friday: House in the Woods
This past week, the girls and I made a *very* fast roadtrip up to the DC suburbs; the entire trip was under 60 hours, with at least 25 of those being spent in the car. The motivation? To attend the One Voice Rocks! concert in Gaithersburg. What made the trip even more special was that
My Happiness Project continues.
I realize that I’ve been fairly quiet here in regards to my Happiness Project. I just haven’t had much to say, and I don’t want to bore you all… I’ve been making progress on this month’s topic (Diet), but not as much as I’d like. Since I feel myself slipping a bit, this public admission
Times Square means Chocolate
After our trip to NYC, we arrived in Times Square where I surprised the girls with a visit to the Harry Potter Exhibition. But then, once we were out and had a soft pretzel (gross) for a little sustenance, the girls wanted to visit places in Times Square. The Toys R Us with the Ferris
Happiness Project: May – Diet
Yesterday, I declared the start of my Happiness Project. For May’s topic, I chose “Diet” as that has been an area I’ve been concentrating on recently anyway. Since I’ve already started working on it and I’m getting anxious to get going on my project, “Diet” is going to start right now. At the moment, my
another goodbye.
Today’s goodbye is being said to soda. Diet coke and Fresca, I will miss you. I think I had the equivalent of FOUR (or was that FIVE?) cans of diet coke today alone. At lunch today, the topic of soda came up. I admit, I drink far more than my share of diet soda. I
dinner – 10 mar 2011
Camille made much of tonight’s dinner, which I modified from the “menu planner”. I didn’t use store-bought garlic bread but made our own. I used whole-wheat pasta and fresh broccoli. I’m finding it very easy to make the processed recipes into more wholesome … I hope I can continue to make minor adjustments….
unexpected benefit
as I wrote the other day, I’ve decided to start using saved menus from the meal planning service I had signed up for a year or two ago. Something magical happened. As these menus have simple *recipes*, Camille has taken to cooking dinner! She’s been making the homemade pizzas (we rely on her — she
meal planning (again)
Once again, I’m frustrated by what we are eating, daily trips to the grocery store, last minute scramble to get dinner on the table. I wonder what it is about early spring that inspires me to work on improving our meal time habits? Last March, I wrote Food for Good Thoughts about how I was
compost – 1 mar 2011
We generate a lot of compost in our daily cooking. We’ve been using a “compost pile” for probably almost 10 years now, but I think we have yet to actually use the compost that we create. I see composting as a way to keep the trash volume lower and less stinky …
olives – 8 feb 2011
Tonight’s dinner included pizza dough topped with olives from New Orleans (a gift from our friends)…. Yum.
