chaos kroger is at it again.
It feels like just yesterday our big Kroger expanded and moved everything around, keeping us on our toes. Apparently, it was over SIX YEARS AGO! Once again, they are expanding, and nothing is where it should be. I create my shopping lists based on where in the store things are, and so when things get
and I live in a small town.
Yes, I do. I wasn’t born here. I wasn’t educated here. And I likely will not die here. But I live here. And my girls have been educated here (even when we were homeschooling — this is where we came for classes). I am a huge fan of urban living. A pedestrian lifestyle with many
small town parade.
As much as I love being in a big city, I also appreciate living in a small town. A place where you run into neighbors when you go out. When the chief of police gives you a hug as does the fire chief. Where you can volunteer and feel you have a hand in making
decatur: signal boxes
I have been hoping that Decatur would figure out a way to spruce up the signal boxes after having seen them painted before (in St. Louis?). And just in time for the Art Festival, a number of our signal boxes now hav e a whole new look!
decatur: lantern parade
As I slowly emerge from my cocoon, I am also getting back to my volunteering. At the Red Cross. In managing our building’s YahooGroup. In assisting with the neighborhood association. And now for CAPS (Citizens Assisting Public Safety). This weekend, I have two events on my calendar. A 5K race this morning. And the Lantern
decatur: slide the city
3:30am I was up. With all the unloading of the tractor trailer trucks right outside my window, how could I sleep? Chloe and I watched as the barricades were erected, the mats put down, the slide rolled out and blown up. I left at 6:45 to go to the police station for my radio (it
farm box.
At the start of the year, we decided to participate in a pseudo-CSA. In the past, we’ve gone with a CSA (community supported agriculture) plan, but I ended up with more eggplant and okra than what I could palate (that means more than none). We decided to subscribe to Moore Farms because not only did
home.
As much as I love to travel, it is nice to come home again. And something that makes home nice? My own bed and washing machine, for sure. But even more? Friends. It takes me a long time to make friends. In Brookhaven, I don’t think I knew the names of more than a couple
waylaid.
I’ve had one of the best weeks ever. Work has been awesome. I’ve been productive and been handed a project that really appeals to me (and even uses my mad Python skillz). I’ve volunteered, hiked, gone to a neighborhood association meeting. I’ve cooked and prepared for a camping trip. Until today. I had worked extra
decatur: friday night lights
Despite having lived in Decatur three blocks from the stadium for three years now, I hadn’t been to a high school football game. Despite having a student at the high school, I haven’t been. But now I have a band student — and so now I’ve been to a game. I was surprised, actually. Surpised
decatur: scenes from the decatur book festival
This past weekend, I spent time volunteering at the Decatur Book Festival despite still being under the weather. The part I enjoyed the most was exploring the festival before it opened, while all was still quiet. I’m hoping that next year I’ll manage to make it to a number of the author talks…
walkable living
One of the reasons we chose to leave our beloved Pine Lake and move to downtown Decatur was for the walkability. While it is lovely to walk around Pine Lake on the many trails, it was almost impossible to walk anywhere other than the post office. While I don’t walk as often as I should,
shopping locally.
With our many visits to NYC and Paris and our year in DC, I’ve always imagined a life of living locally. But somehow, I just can’t seem to manage it yet. Today, I read this story in the New Yorker about a local mozzarella place in Manhattan — and why it has gone out of
volunteering: fire caps
I admit. I’m a dork. Through and through. While I am what I am, it is not worth trying to fight it. I am so much better now that I am willing to embrace it. And tonight, I found my way back home to congregate with my Fire CAPS friends. We didn’t do much …
Spring Break Day 1 : Decatur, GA
Our first full day of Spring Break didn’t take us very far, but that didn’t meant that it wasn’t lots of fun. While Camille, Claire and Phelix walked up to Claire’s house to get Chloe from her sleepover, I went over to the ribbon cutting for the new Decatur Visitor’s Center: Once Camille and Chloe
quiet around here
With Rob off in Ohio and Chloe on her Tybee Island field trip, it has been fairly quiet around here. I’m slowly starting to feel that I’m going to be able to dig myself out of my hole, albeit slowly. The to-do list is shrinking faster than it is growing for a change, and I’ve
eye on the sky: crazy clouds this evening
The clouds and wind came rolling into town tonight. I caught some of the show using my time lapse gadget …
Preparing for the President
Our little city, Decatur, GA, is busy getting ready for President Obama’s visit tomorrow!
city living ups and downs
Yesterday, Phelix and I drove Camille down to the Boys and Girls Club for her homeschool class. While the club is about two miles away and easy walking distance, I generally end up giving her a ride one way or the other. It is close enough that it only takes me about twenty minutes round-trip,
bonfire patrol
Last week, I stopped by the police station after our high school tour, and I was presented with a new raincoat, jacket, hat, vest, and badge. Now that I graduated from the ‘citizens’ police academy”“, I can start to volunteer at many of Decatur’s events. I haven’t had radio or traffic direction training yet, but
