La rentrรฉe!
It is time for back-to-school once again! This year, back-to-school is quite different from all the years before. The girls were homeschooled for a while, then one went to school and the other didn’t, then they were both in school, then the other one didn’t go to school, then one was in college and then
day 20 – senior year.
Senior year! Exams. Prom. Tears. Pomp and Circumstance. Parties. Graduation. Yearbooks. But not for this year’s seniors. Last days of school via Zoom. No gatherings – so no prom, no graduation, no parties. No gifts. Chloe this week did have her senior portraits taken, but only from over 6ft. And she got a big “lockdown”

Camille’s latest science experiment is quite lovely.
back to school.
After an action-packed summer, the girls started back-to-school yesterday. For the first time ever, the girls are in the same school and Chloe has teachers that had Camille as a student. I think in some ways, the girls are happy to get back to their routines, friends, and studies. As for me, I’m hoping the
winding down.
It’s that time of year. All the tests are behind them. Books turned in. Lockers emptied. But they still have to report to school each day. The teachers have been creative in relevant projects — just because the tests are over doesn’t mean that there is nothing left to learn! Chloe slept over at a
APUSH award for camille
Tonight, Camille was honored at the high school for all of her work in her APUSH (AP US History) class. She’s enjoyed the class, despite the volume of reading and analyzing it has required. Her enthusiasm was so evident that her teacher has been quite appreciative of her participation. Combined with her award from last
chloe: book festival introducer
Chloe had the honor of introducing Tony DiTerlizzi on the Children’s Stage at the Decatur Book Festival this weekend. When we went up to Tony to talk to him beforehand, he asked if we lived nearby. I pointed at the building behind him and said “Yup, in that building right there!” But then went on
poetry slam for chloe
Not Camille is interested in the language arts, Chloe is too. A few years back, Chloe decided to enter the LEAF poetry slam. As it was for teens, she was asked to be the “calibration poet”. Since then, she’s gotten more interested in writing poems for poetry slams, and this spring tried out for her
creative writing award for camille
Camille’s first year of school is almost at a close. While she has faced challenges in moving from homeschooling to public schooling, she’s managed to find her way and learn. Not only has she been successful in her classes, she’s been able to thrive! Last night, she was invited to the SGA Awards Ceremony, where
hairspray!
One of the (many) reasons that we decided for Camille to head off to school this year after years of homeschooling was to have a chance to participate in more extracurricular activities. Soon after the start of the school year, she joined the drama club and then the crew of the spring production, assisting with
school: graduation
After almost two years at F.AVE, it is time for Chloe to move on from being in upper elementary and onto middle school. The past two years have been a roller-coaster of lows and highs. I’m thrilled with the mentoring, guiding and teaching she’s had this year, and I hope she’ll have more of the
school: overnight field trip
Chloe’s on a field trip. Sure, she’s been on lots of field trips before with her school, but this is a three-day field trip to the beach! At 6am, she board a big old coach bus with her class and a few other fifth grade classes to head to the Burton 4-H Center on Tybee
school: expressions on the ave
The fifth grade at Chloe’s school has been hard at work on a “unit of inquiry” these past few weeks. While I’m not yet convinced that the IB program at her school is helping the kids to learn better as opposed to “having something to show”, Chloe was excited to have worked on the project
literary cafe
I will readily (probably too readily) admit it — I’m not thrilled that Chloe is in school. I miss our days of traveling and exploring together. I miss our homeschool schedule. I’m trying to make the most of it, of course, but I don’t like it. However, despite the issues she’s had at school, Chloe
and so it begins …
Last week I called the high school to set up a counseling appointment for us to begin the process of transitioning Camille from homeschool to school. While I’m not 100% sure she’ll be headed to Decatur High School in August, we’re very seriously considering it. My thought was that if we could talk to someone
new2school: bumping into the teacher
I’ve mentioned before that Chloe’s school year last year was not a good experience. I haven’t written much about it here, but the classroom and teacher were an extremely poor fit for Chloe. By March, she was ready to quit school. We worked to find ways to find “solutions”, but there was nothing that helped
new2school: school picnic
Last Friday, Camille, Chloe, Chloe’s friend and I packed up some fruit, veggies, bread and cheese and made our way down to Oakhurst for Chloe’s school picnic. Last year, Chloe attended the picnic with friends as we were starting to consider having her attend school there in a few months. Chloe’s school year last year
first day of school
The summer went by far, far too fast. I can’t believe that it is time to turn Chloe back over to the system. Last year was pretty awful, and I just hope that all will go well for Chloe this year. At last night’s “meet and greet” she was so excited to be back at
instagram: pool time
At long last, we had some pool time once again. Chloe loved swimming with her two new friends from downstairs. I just hope that the older girl is not in Chloe’s class. As terrible as it sounds, Chloe’s class lsat year was full of drama, and I’d love her to be able to come home
new2school: science project
“Mom, I have a science project that is for extra credit. I don’t want to do it.” Two days later: “Everybody else is doing it, and people will think I’m stupid if I don’t do it.” Next day: “I left the instructions at home.” Next day: “I left the plants at the cabin.” So, two
