Lost in a Book
Saturday night was the Pine Lake chili cook-off. As the president of the neighborhood association, it was my job to make sure that publicity and preparations were taken care of, plus the awarding of prizes. Overall, the event was a smashing success. The beach house was crowded, but not overly so. Lots of our neighbors
Valentine’s Day Sugar High
On Saturday, we had celebrated the holiday of red hearts and sugar. The girls and I gathered lots of art supplies and invited lots of friends over to spend an afternoon of fun. We had cookie decorating, pin the heart on Cupid, valentines exchange and lots of running around having fun.
Chinese New Year
All along, we were excited about having guests for dinner tonight, but we found a great website with Chinese New Year’s Crafts yesterday, and the girls decided they wanted to do them ALL. We headed to Hobby Lobby for pipe cleaners, tissue paper, felt and more, and ended up making lots and lots of crafts.
50 States Video
While working on a series of posts about homeschooling today, I came across this really cute video. I just had to share. Did everyone learn this song as a kid? I can get through Michigan still. Guess I need to practice. I remember learning “Io-way”, not “Io-wA”. How about you?
Did You Know?
That the Poinsettia is named after a former Congressman from South Carolina? That’s just one of the many interesting pieces of trivia that I encountered in The Stranger and the Statesman: James Smithson, John Quincy Adams, and the Making of America’s Greatest Museum: The Smithsonian by Nina Burleigh. It was a fascinating read, not just
Local Food?
Since my parents have been listening to Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver and I have read part of it (I didn’t finish before I had to return it to the library), we set out today to see what local food is to be had around here in Blue Ridge. We went to the local
Last Day of Classes
The girls had special celebrations at homeschool classes today. Chloe had her first art show and loved showing off all her varied works of art. Camille had a Roman Banquet in Living History — lounging on pillows eating olives, yum!

We’re studying Belize this week, and the girls made these Central American hats as part of their studies….

The Daisies made helping hands at our meeting yesterday.
Local Food
So there’s a big movement afoot and I want to learn more. It is so complicated to make good choices. I hear people say that they never open a can. But is that really “the best”? I want to use tomatoes out of season (maybe that’s the problem?). Is it better to buy fresh tomatoes
Homeschooling 101
Among parents, schooling is a topic of converstaion that comes around again and again. We all know that the choice of school is an important one and that there is no one right answer. For our family, the right answer is homeschooling. Our two daughters, Camille (almost 9) and Chloe (just 5) have been homeschooled
To Junie B. or not to Junie B.?
Is Junie B. Jones Talking Trash?By ANNA JANE GROSSMANPublished: July 26, 2007The New York Times I guess I’m not the only one who had a strong negative reaction to these books. In a house where I need to encourage my child to stop reading, I don’t have much patience for these books…
I’m Done
after staying up VERY late and then reading all morning, I’m done. Now no one can spoil the ending for me; I’ll try not to spoil it for anyone else….
We are Home
from the children’s bookstore where the girls got to make potions, find out what their patronus is and more. Now we are settling into a long night of reading….
Random Bits
After 3 months of no mobile blogging, I am finally able to email photos from my phone to my blog. I don’t think Google actually fixed the problem, but the merger of AT&T and Cingular gave my phone a new email address, tricking Google into thinking it was a new user? My light summer reading

Coming to the End
Yesterday, Rob and the girls pre-ordered the last Harry Potter novel at the local bookstore. The store is having a release party for all who pre-order, and we are excited to be able to go (assuming we are in town). I’m very torn. While I’m excited to read a new installment, knowing that it is
Getting Support
I’m impressed. MySpace technical support rescued me from a self-induced problem. While it took them a while to get to it, they did manage to help me sort out the problem. (I’d argue that they should have a way of making sure the problem I created for myself doesn’t exist.) Now I’m having a minor
