La rentrรฉe!
It is time for back-to-school once again! This year, back-to-school is quite different from all the years before. The girls were homeschooled for a while, then one went to school and the other didn’t, then they were both in school, then the other one didn’t go to school, then one was in college and then
she’ll be a scottie.
Despite not having all of her acceptances in, Chloe made the big step and committed to attending Agnes Scott for college. I’m very excited for her!!
the most exciting time of the year.
It is getting real! Chloe has now been accepted at three different colleges! She’s still waiting for a few more, but the decision is going to be very tough! But, it is nice to have choices….
smith. – 24 feb 2017
We looked at every college in the nation and few schools outside the country. We visited dozens. She applied to ten. She was accepted at most. Three made the final cut. But when I saw her face that day in February, I knew. She’s a Smithie!
letters about literature.
A surprise award! Camille submitted her “Letter about Literature” independently (as opposed to the other winners who had their essays submitted via their schools) and won third prize in her age category. While the award is a statewide award, the ceremony was here in Downtown decatur at our library, and the prize was a gift
college search: rhode island colleges
Camille had a few Rhode Island schools on her list at the start, but by the time we made our plans to visit the northeast, only one was left. Brown University. Urban campus, good academic reputation, a nice fit for what she wants. I thought we were going to not like it. I really did.
college search: pennsylvania colleges
A school that has been high on Camille’s list and was one of the main reasons for us coming up north to visit colleges is Bryn Mawr. We booked a room at the Wyndham Alumnae House right on campus so we could maximize our time spent there. After getting our room, we took a long
college search: massachusetts colleges
September break. Time to tour the schools in the northeast that Camille is interested in! We flew into Boston and spent the night there to get a little bit of a feel for the city. Driving out of town, we went through Northeastern to see where it is situated. From there, we took a leisurely
college search: california colleges
We continued our spring break adventures, traveling down the west coast from visiting washington colleges and onto visiting oregon colleges and then into California. Camille had only two “northern” California schools on her list. Our first stop was to drive through Berkeley. California state schools are not in the running for a number of reasons,
college search: oregon colleges
As we traveled down the west coast from visiting washington colleges, we entered into the next phase of our spring break, visiting Oregon colleges. As we reached Portland, we took a quick turn though the University of Portland. Not a school on her list, but there and worth a drive-thru. We spent a couple of
college search: washington state
February break we spent looking at college. April break was no different. On the first day of April break, Rob, Camille, Chloe, and I flew out to Washington State to visit colleges in Washington, Oregon, and California. In our first pass, Camille had identified a cluster of schools near Seattle and Portland as possibilities, most
college search: always looking
Even though Camille didn’t join me on my trip to Memphis, I convinced my family yo take the time the time to visit Rhodes College. On paper, the school fulfills many of Camille’s requirements – “real” college campus in a city, liberal arts. Plus, it has a good reputation for merit scholarships. I fear it
college search: local schools
Back in February, Camille and I took a trip up to North and South Carolina to tour four colleges. When we returned to Decatur, we took one more official tour over the break. Though Agnes Scott College is a little too close to home (5 blocks away and across the street from Camille’s high school),
photo friday: carolina colleges
Back in February, Camille and I continued her college search by visiting four schools in North Carolina and South Carolina. The trip was rife with challenges from the start, and the snow and ice didn’t help. Snowed out of this. Snowed out of that. Delays and cancellations. Ice covered roads. Slips and falls. But we
college search: the map
DONE! The first pass of research, that is. We now have 133 colleges on our spreadsheet of possible choices. Where to go from here? I’m not worried, though I think the number of choices might be overwhelming for the other people involved in the process. We can quickly come up with a “serious” list. And
college search: nc/sc schools
Camille and I took the first half of February break to visit a handful of schools in North and South Carolina. None were high on her list (I don’t know if very many are high on her list yet), but I thought we could get started with some tours and learn more about what she
college search: georgia schools
while we had looked at schools in NYC and Florida, we hadn’t yet looked at many schools here in Georgia – Camille had done a day at a Georgia Tech program – but no real investigations. One Saturday in February, Camille had a GHP interview in Locust Grove. Being halfway to Macon, we decided to
college search: nyc schools
In planning our trip to NYC in January, we had a number of goals in mind. Seeing Hamilton. Attending the kindie Hootenany. And visiting colleges. Planning is a challenge. Different schools give tours at different times. Go here then there? Or the other way around? And, unfortunately, most of the schools we wanted to see
college search: florida schools
While we were in Florida between Christmas and New Years, we decided to drive through some campuses on our way home just to start getting a feel for what Camille likes and dislikes about where a campus is and how it is laid out. Perhaps that sounds a little superficial, but as one of her
around atlanta: cluetown emory
Family time. With a super-busy middle schooler and a high schooler who is balancing IB, college search, and work, it is hard to find time for family time. My goal is that every weekend, we do one interesting thing as a family. It isn’t easy, but I do try. Today we chose to visit Emory
