it’s done!
as i wrote last week, I have been working on a scarf for a couple of years now. And, at long last, I have finally cast-off! It’s done! Maybe the next one won’t take quite so long…. nor be quite so long….
dear tooth fairy
at the concert yesterday, chloe lost a tooth. As usual, she put it under her pillow. In the past, she has been known to leave a note, asking the tooth fairy something about herself. Chloe has learned that her tooth fairy’s name is Penelope. Well, last night the tooth fairy arrived and found not just
YAKMC
yet again today we headed to YAKMC (yet another kids music concert). A shorter drive than most of our concert trips — this one was only about 20-25 minutes away in midtown. We worked our way through the traffic to the Park Tavern by Piedmont park for Grand Day Out. On the bill were The
personal choices
as a parent, I prefer to have my kids use crayons and colored pencils — not markers. play with simple, wooden toys. you know me. i was the cloth diapering, baby wearing, breastfeeding, birkenstock wearing mom. flash forward to the time past diapers and nursing. to the time when the kids get allowance. not allowance
three weeks of autumn
how does that happen? isn’t autumn 13 weeks long like all of the other seasons? apparently not. my autumn/thanksgiving decorations, what few I have, only get to escape the storage room for a couple of weeks each year. On September 27th or soon thereafter, we decorate the house for Halloween (the rule is we wait
astroboy
while in Japan last year, we stopped in a huge bookstore in Kyoto. Camille had been interested in manga for a while, and I figured I might as well test the waters myself. I picked up two different books. One was the manga version Tale of Genji, a classic tale written in 1023AD. The other
handwork
through a few strange coincidences, yesterday I learned that there is a handwork class for homeschoolers being offered right here in our little hamlet. Mostly, it is Waldorf homeschoolers attending the class, but both of my girls have started knitting projects, and I find that I just am not experienced enough to help them when
photos and videos from the weekend in DC/VA
Weekend photos: Ralph at XM: Ralph at Jammin’ Java:
headed home, the long way around
after a slow morning invoving a bagel breakfast and a swim in the pool, we checked out of the hotel and headed home. But not in very much of a hurry. First, we fought the traffic and lines and went to Great Falls Park on the Virginia side, where we met up with some friends.
escaping the crowds
on saturday morning, we headed over to Jammin’ Java to see another show. I was shocked by the traffic in Vienna, VA. The past few times we have been there, the traffic was nothing like what we saw. Perhaps people were trying to avoid I-66, which seems to be a construction mess at the Beltway.
favorite things
the girls and I have some favorite things. one is to go to Ralph’s World concerts. Another is to go to concerts at XM radio in Washington, DC. I went back and forth on whether to make the trip this year (we did last year, but had the added bonus of seeing Rob who was
road trip!
3:30am. that’s when I got up and turned on the coffee pot. Of course, I forgot to do a couple things I meant to do, but the girls and I were on the road by 4am. That got us up to Virginia by just after 11am: and then checked into a hotel, a shopping trip
weary
two days ago, I wrote about how much energy I have. While that’s still mostly true (I hae a headache that’s dragging me down right now), I’m feeling weary overall. Not tired, not depressed, but plain old overloaded. Like no matter how hard I work, I always feel there is more to be done. Like
election day in Pine Lake
Have you ever been “out here” to Pine Lake? When we lived near Brookhaven, I thought Stone Mountain was SO far away. And I had never heard of Pine Lake until the day I decided to move here. Driving in that first time, I felt like had come home. Weird, since I had never been
the turtle is hibernating
Usually, when the days start to get short and darkness becomes the norm, I feel like slowing down. I cuddle up on the couch in my favorite sweatshirt, and it takes much more effort to get everything done. Something is different this year. I am getting more and more energy this fall. I started out
NaBloPoMo
Once, long ago (2006), I participated in NaBloPoMo. Even though I really don’t know that I have anything interesting to say, much less enough things to fill a whole month of posts, I’m going to participate again. Maybe I’ll just have to plan enough trips this month so I can have things to write about.
halloween 2009
how did Halloween come and go so fast? Maybe it was the fact that we were out of town so many weekends in October? Maybe it was the fact that I’ve been sick with a cold/sinus infection for so many days now? I have no idea, but I really hope that next year we manage
you’re grounded!
last night the girls and I called our kitty Gazoo in at the usual time — when it starts to get dark. She didn’t come. Unusual for her to not come, but not unheard of. As the night got later, we became more and more concerned. Rob and the girls searched all the nearby streets;
chloe’s kayaking trip
on Sunday, Rob took Chloe down to Pine Lake for a trial run in the kayak. Apparently, she had a fantastic time out on our tiny little lake. She got to go out to Harry’s Island and walk around it; I don’t think many in Pine Lake have ever been out there! She’s looking forward
paper towels
i love my dish towels! I have a nice set of “plain” plaid ones for all seasons, plus a variety of holiday/seasonal ones that we rotate through during the year. These kitchen towels are not decorative; they are my workhorses. I don’t know how long ago, perhaps 4 or 5 years now, I banned paper
