celebrate!
A friend posted this grumbly article The Dubious, Brand-Led Surge of Fake National Holidays on Facebook while I was busy preparing my chocolate zucchini bread for National Zucchini Day.
Why celebrate this silly “holidays”? Some come from lobbies, corporate marketing campaigns, etc. Some don’t make sense – wrong season for fresh veggies, etc. Some are just plain old silly.
But I love them anyway. Each week I post a list of upcoming “holidays”. I’ve been doing it for about a year and a half, and each week I try to add more to the list: celebrations.
Why? So many reasons. I get caught up in the day-to-day drudgery of working, maintaining our home, taking care of kids. A “celebration” reminds to me to be thankful. I get stuck in a rut, and a daily celebration encourages me to try or cook something outside of our usual repertoire. Who does that hurt? Why is that a problem for ANYONE? It doesn’t dilute our “true” holidays in anyway.
The daily celebrations are one way that I can be mindful and can encourage myself to try new things. That’s enough for me.
