photo friday: nine hours at JFK
When we booked our tickets to Ireland, we had a nice, reasonable layover at JFK. But with schedule changes, our layover at JFK increased to be NINE hours. Nine hours!! Who wants to spend nine hours in an airport?
Instead, the girls and I looked into heading into the city for a couple of hours to just be in our favorite place for a little while.
We found the luggage storage at JFK easily and check our three rolling bags. I don’t know what I was expecting exactly, but the guy from the storage place barked at us “You have any bananas in the bags??” Um, no. After opening our bags to show him the contents and prove we didn’t have any bananas, he took down my info (passport, flights) and made me pose for a photo. Even though the storage appeared to be chaotic, I had hopes that we’d see our bags again later that day.
We made our way over to the AirTrain and rode out to Howard Beach – even though the ride into the city is longer that way, I like it. The MetroFare machines only took cash (stupid machines), and I didn’t have the right change to add to the card. So I used the money on the card and left to fill the card. Still had trouble getting the machine to add exactly how much I wanted to add. I finally released the girls from the AirTrain jail and we jumped on the A train into the city.
Our first stop? Midtown Comics for Camille to pick up her Wednesday comics. Once she had them in hand, she was very happy.
Our second stop? H&M to buy Chloe a sweatshirt. We are headed to Ireland and she didn’t even pack a sweatshirt. Grumble.
I had hoped to go to the Top of the Rock, but the first ticket time available was for much later in the evening … too late for us. I hadn’t wanted to buy the tickets ahead of time in case we didn’t make it in time. Instead, we found ourselves a late lunch at Rockefeller Center.
After some more time exploring, we made our way back to JFK and back to our bags. Just as we had left them! Without our TSA PreCheck, we zoomed through security and had time to stop and play the giant interactive games in the terminal. Then we were on to the gate where we found plenty of chairs and lots of outlets for charging up all of our devices.
