Ireland Trip: Day 16
I was up early (as usual) to work and get everything in order for our final weekend trip. I had hoped to hit the road by 9am so we could have a chance to go to the Cliffs of Moher on our way. While we had the time, it didn’t work out. Everyone packed, and we got the car loaded. Probably overloaded as I didn’t insist on everyone sharing bags as I had for our trip to Northern Ireland. After some winding around, we finally made it out of Galway.
Just outside Kinvarra, we took a side road to go see Traught Beach. The only others out there was a preschool class on a trip to the beach in summer. All had on their winter coats, hats, scarves and wellies. Brrr. We then headed up into The Burren and to the Poulnaborne Dolmen. We had bee there 12 years ago – the last time we were there, there weren’t ropes keeping us back, but otherwise the thing that had changed most were the girls!
As we drove on to the Cliffs of Moher, we could see the fog on the coast. And when we got to the entrance, we were turned away. Too dangerous to go to the site in the fog! Instead I showed the girls photos of the cliffs from the last time we were there. Maybe on the way back to Galway we’ll stop by again. We were all getting hungry for lunch at that point, so we stopped at The Creamery Bar across the street from Bunratty Castle. My lasagna wasn’t very good, but Camille enjoyed her Irish stew and sticky toffee pudding.
After getting stuck behind many tractors on small roads, we finally arrived in Kenmare. Parking was difficult to find, but we found a spot and walked to the bar. We had been upgraded from a room to an apartment across the street. Wow. Lovely place!! We then went out to explore the town (bookstore closed) and walk down to the Stone Ring. We gathered our bags from the car and pulled them over to the apartment. Rob and I went out to get some apples, bread, seltzer and cheese for a snack – lunch had been quite filling!
