bathroom remodeling (finally)

house Article

chloe taping - 28 jul 2012

When we moved to our condo almost ten months ago, the only room we (Rob) painted was the girls’ room. Since they were moving from each having a very nice room into a shared room, we wanted to make theirs cozy for them. They chose new bed covers that matched and then picked out a lavender paint color to go with them.

Since them, I’ve been grumbling about our boring off-white walls in the rest of our unit. But as I think about choosing colors, I get overwhelmed with all the cascading decisions. And so I’ve just done nothing about it except grumble. A few weeks ago new neighbors moved in and mentioned all the painting that they’ve been doing. While I haven’t seen it yet, I decided that I should just take the plunge and get going.

While we were in Texas, I spotted a perfect shower curtain for the girls’ bathroom. From it, I was able to come up with a plan for their bathroom (the smallest room we have) and also make some preliminary plans for the rest of the unit.

The shower curtain arrived in the mail last week, and we got right to picking paint colors. This weekend, we taped and painted. And on Monday, the girls and I bought picture rails and picture frames at IKEA.

Still to come – a towel rack. I want a multi-bar one like the heated kind you see in Europe, but I’m having no luck finding one. Once that’s up, we can hang art on the wall next to it – once we’ve picked out the photos and had prints made. I also will keep my eye out for tchotchkes for their sink. Hooks for the bak of the door would be nice too.

    Hi Gwyneth,

Great job on that bathroom re-decorating.
About the tower warmer, we installed one a couple months ago and I love it. Our bathroom is small as well, so maybe the kind we found would be good for you too, see http://www.vintagetub.com/asp/product_detail.asp?item_no=AHC-B

As usual, you are inspiring me. We haven’t opened a single can of paint here in almost 12 years. Still the white walls. Maybe if I start with the bath, being smallest with a color scheme dictated by the late ’30’s tile, it’ll get me on a roll. Also, I know you said it’s place holder art, but the magazine covers are a kind of witty touch. Great job, all!

Well, glad that I can inspire you even if we’re both riding on my neighbor’s enthusiasm! 🙂 Yup, I’m starting with the smallest room and not letting myself get overwhelmed with the rest. The magazine covers as art was not an original idea. My parents papered the half-bath in my childhood home with New Yorker covers…

Very clever, well done. I’ve had a couple of towel warmers but they never worked as well as the ones in Europe (tepid rather than steaming hot). Probably because I didn’t spend the major dough to get one that is wired in the wall and very expensive. It is a wonderful luxury though and worth it.
