Out West Trip: Day 14 (Barstow, CA to Morro Bay, CA)
Today’s Highlights:
Visiting a ghost town, going down into an old silver mine, camping at the beach in Morro Bay.
I got up early to do some more uploading of photos and other things on the computer. Everyone else got up a little later, and we packed up and left the KOA just a bit after 8. We picked up a quick breakfast and headed up to the Calico Ghost Town. We arrived so early that much of the town was not yet open. We got to visit the mine and have a soda at the sweet shop.
We then hit the road to head further west. In Bakersfield, we stopped at a Starbucks for an hour in order to use the wi-fi which was much, much faster than the one at the KOA. From there, we left the highway and cut across vineyards to the Pacific, ending up at the campground in Morro Bay around 4:30pm.
The campground is really an old beach parking lot, but actually turned out to be nicer than I expected. We could see the ocean from Evie and had a picnic table nestled in the trees. It was raining when we arrived, so we went out to pick up supplies for a picnic supper and a drive around Morro Bay. Back at the site, we went for a walk on the beach and then ate our picnic in the car before getting ready for bed and watching an episode of Doctor Who on the iPad.
My Trekaroo review of Calico Ghost Town.
