Out West Trip: Day 9 (Silver City, NM to Holbrook, AZ)
Today’s Highlights:
Exploring a catwalk high over a river, walking on a swinging bridge, looking at 225 million year old trees, entering Mountain STANDARD Time.
We got up later than we had hoped and tried to quickly get ready to head out the the Catwalk National Recreation Trail. The drive up was a little slow. The hike up to the top of the river from the end of the canyon catwalk was strenuous and steep. On the way back down, the girls stopped to swim in a pretty swimming hole; the water was FREEZING!
From Glenwood, we headed over the mountains into Arizona through some very pretty little towns. We arrived at the south end of the Petrified Forest/Painted Desert around 3:30pm. After walking the Giant Logs trail, we walked the Crystal Forest trail and went to see some old ruins. A quick stop in the visitor’s center, and we were all tired out. We arrived at the KOA before 7pm MST (really AZ?). Rob grabbed a burger dinner from the grill at the KOA; the girls and I got things set up and made dinner for ourselves. After laundry and playing on the playground, we went to bed. Thankfully, the winds were not as bad — the KOA folks said it had been blowing at 60mph the night before.
