Seeing: Audubon Aquarium of the Americas
We spent our Monday in New Orleans sailing on the river, inhaling powdered sugar and riding the rails, waiting for it to be Tuesday when the museums would be open.
Tuesday morning the girls and I headed down to the waterfront to visit the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas. We had already decided to splurge for the “Audubon Experience” tickets, which gave us entrance to the aquarium, insectarium and zoo, as well as tickets to the IMAX.
The aquarium was, needless to say, a huge hit with the girls. It was practically empty, so the girls had front row seats to whatever tank they wanted to observe. They loved the “rainforest” area, the otters and the penguins. We paid a little extra to buy food in order to feed the rays in “Adventure Island”, the little indoor play area. What a blast! Both girls loved feeding, petting and getting splashed by the rays.
After we had our fill of the aquarium, we went next door to watch the IMAX, Hurricane on the Bayou which “tells the story of Hurricane Katrina and the impact that Louisianaโs disappearing wetlands has on hurricane protection.” A powerful movie, bringing both me and the girls to tears. I’d not recommend it for younger or sensitive kids.

We love the aquarium in New Orleans! It isn’t the biggest or flashiest we have been to, but it is just perfect for our kids. I can’t wait to hear what you thought of the Insectarium!
I prefer the smaller aquariums myself — I have yet to visit the Atlanta one … I just can’t convince myself that it is worth the time and money … (The kids have been to it, just not me.)
