Around Atlanta: Arabia Mountain
As I walked out the door to head down to the lake to welcome the sun back from the longest night, I immediately had to strip off some layers. For pre-dawn on December 22nd, it sure was hot and humid!! I had planned on taking the girls to the High Museum that morning, but after feeling how warm it was out, I decided we should take advantage of the weather and spend sometime outside.
Earlier this year, we had visited Arabia Mountain for the first time, and I couldn’t believe we had not gone before; what an amazing place! The granite outcropping is a wonderfully surreal magic place…I figured it would be perfect for a little hike today. East on I-20, the Davidson-Arabia Nature Preserve is just about a mile south of Stonecrest Mall and quite easy to get to; a DeKalb County park, the parking and entrance is free. Additionally, the PATH bike trail runs through the park; Chloe wants to go back soon to go biking.
But for today, we walked the loop through the woods, by the quarry lake and then up the outcropping. Chloe, with Rob’s help, enjoyed finding a number of geocaches along the trail. Camille, as usually, went off into her own fantasy land as we walked along. And I took photos, as usual. We all enjoyed our couple of ours out in nature on this warm, warm day in Atlanta!
The hike is not strenuous and not very long, but good shoes are a good idea as there are loose chippings on the outcrop, of course.
