snow swimming
on our final full day in Steamboat Springs, the girls hung out with their “cousins,” went shopping downtown at the candy store and then swam at the hot springs! Strange to see people walking around outside in swimsuits when the temperature is in the teens, but it sounds like everyone had a good time!
ski school
yesterday, the girls headed off for their day on the slopes at ski school! Getting all suited up was quite a challenge, especially the ski boots! Rob took them off to their classes where they learned some of the basics of skiing. Though it looks cool, Chloe declared the “Magic Carpet” to be boring. Rob
more fun in the snow
yesterday, first thing in the morning, rob called the ski school up at the mountain and made reservations for the girls for a day of lessons on Monday. That done, he headed out to rent a snowboard for himself and then came back and took the girls up to the mountain to get all the
snow, lots of it!
I woke up at 4am and could not get back to sleep. I decided to get up and take care of some organizing and work on my photos from the day before. Chloe got up at 6am, and we sat in bed and chatted for a long time. Around 7am, we finally ventured up to
christmas travels
the girls were up at 4am this morning, but we managed to hold them off until 5am. After the frenzy of gift opening and happy dances, we got busy with cleaning up and packing to head to the airport. The girls did take a few breaks to play with their new toys and to show
the days are getting longer
in addition to our yule party and our solstice fire, I celebrated the return of longer days by heading down to the lake to watch the sun return after the longest night of the year. Being down by the water in the early dawn was a wonderful, peaceful moment.
winter solstice
while we enjoyed ourselves at our Yule Party, I wanted to start some family tradition for the solstice as well. On the eve of the longest night, we set up the fire pit and roasted marshmallows. To set this fire apart from others, I read a meditation from the UUA website; I was surprised at
yule party
last friday was our yule party! I planned and planned, but then ran out of time to make all the food I had planned to make. But we did do most of the crafts, and I like to think that everyone had a great time…I know I did. I’m going to record all that I
pine lake photos
an announcement went out about an upcoming photo art show in pine lake, and I gathered up some of my Pine Lake photos. Help me choose which ones to submit!
like an old friend
being home for three weeks in a row has its advantages. Despite it being the holiday season, when we have twice as much to accomplish, I’ve been able to keep up with all the tasks and even get ahead a bit! I had promised the girls that when things were under control, we would start
progressive dinner
last night we joined the annual Progressive Dinner here in Pine Lake. While I was disappointed that we did not get to host this year, I was quite happy to not have to clean up this morning! Despite the drizzle, we walked from house to house, bringing along our progressive crudite. It was the kind
trip down the Nile
yesterday, the girls and I headed over to the Carlos Museum at Emory. Even after having lived so close to Emory and driven through it often for so many years, I think this was my very first time to actually step foot on the campus! Camille had been to the Carlos before with friends. When
new shoes
go ahead, say it. “I told you so” or “well, duh!” As I wrote about a month ago in the turtle is hibernating, I’ve been trying to get on the treadmill every day. I had gotten up to an hour, but at a low rate. Any faster and my shins would hurt. Then three weeks
books!
what do you read in your free (ha ha) time? Has it changed through the years? when I finished my thesis, I read nothing but absolute fluff (note that for me absolute fluff is Fern Michaels and similar). As I got further away from needing to give my brain a break, I also ended up
jeans!
after having resigned myself to never being able to find jeans for the girls, we finally managed to find some with adjustable waistbands! At Target! (At our SuperTarget that will be closing next month….we are not sure what we are going to do once it does….where else can I get cat food, butter, jeans, etc
pine lake pageant
on saturday, we joined our Pine Lake neighbors for the Cookie Exchange and the Lighting of the Lake down at the beach house. Both girls had parts in the little pageant; Camille read the “reindeer report” and Chloe was both a mouse and a reindeer. The girls just loved it, and the event reminded me
cookie exchange
i’m not a baker. so when it comes time for the cookie exchange, i’m really quite lucky to have a daughter that loves to bake! This year, Camille decided to make four dozen snickerdoodles for the Pine Lake Cookie Exchange! After breakfast yesterday, she and her two helpers took over the kitchen for a couple
pizza party
last year, I started a “tradition” of having potluck dinners about once a week. However, our crazy travel schedule soon got in the way. The few weekends that we were all home at the same time were full of errands and chores that were otherwise getting put off. Finally, four months after Rob has returned
