NYC at Christmas
A few weeks ago, I thought it might be nice to arrange a day trip to NYC from Washington for me and the girls to go see the tree, windows and lights. I then realized that Dan Zanes would be having a Holiday House Party in NYC. Rob then decided he would like to join us. We bought train tickets and show tickets and Rob also invited his brother to join us.
Yesterday we got left the apartment at 5:30 and took a taxi to Union Station where we hopped aboard the train to NYC! As we got further north, we could see snow on the ground, which excited the girls! In NYC, we walked to Grand Central via Herald Square. One set of the Macy’s windows were decorated with a “Miracle on 34th Street” theme. The other was of an imaginative ornament making machine. The girls loved the windows and the bits of snow that they could find.
At Grand Central Station, we met up with Jeff, Rae and the cousins. The three girls were all dressed in the same purple coat. we headed over towards Rockefeller Center, but of course we went by American Girl on the way. The girls had fun looking at all the displays there. It was not nearly as crowded as I thought it would be! However, the area around the skating rink was jammed packed with people, and we couldn’t really see much. We went down to the food court, found a table and had some lunch.
After lunch, we went up to the Nintendo store and then walked over to Times Square and visited the M&M store and the Times Square ToysRUs. TRU was packed, buy the girls were so excited by the Ferris Wheel that we got tickets. As there was time to waste before their assigned ride time, we went out for a walk around the square while waiting. Back at TRU, Rob and Camille got the Barbie car on the Ferris wheel while Jeff, Chloe and Catherine got the My Little Pony car. Christian loved seeming them circle past each time.
After that, the cousins had to head home, so we headed to the New Victory Theater, which is on 42nd Street by Times Square. It is a nice theater, but no photos allowed of the stage. Chloe fell asleep, but the rest of us enjoyed the Dan Zanes and Friends Holiday House party! After the show, we talked to Sonia de Los Santos and then Dan Zanes.
We walked back to Rockefeller Center. Rob ran over to AG to find some gifts for the girls, then we went back to the Nintendo store for a little bit before walking to Bryant Park, where the girls played in the snow — snow flurries were falling as well. We stopped at a pizza place for some dinner, then on to Penn station where we waited for the train. We got four seats together on the train. We all napped a little on the train — it got in late, around 3:30, and we could not find a taxi to go home. Finally, a driver felt sorry for the freezing kids and drove us home.

How fun! I have never been to NYC. A friend of mine that works for Delta had talked about us going up for a day – but it has never come to fruition.
Glad you found a taxi to take you home – that could have been scary.
It was a great day!!! I’m so glad it wasn’t raining or sleeting.
Oh, the taxi things wasn’t scary. Just frustrating. Even with some transients around, Union Station felt quite safe. The security person came over to tell me we couldn’t stand inside, and I explained to her that there were no taxis and my kids were freezing. She called taxi dispatch and stood nearby. No taxis came, but still, we never felt unsafe.
Penn Station was another story. I NEVER feel safe there.
So happy you had a great time. This time of here is beautiful in the city!
Oops..time of YEAR!
