A Shocking, yet not Surprising, morning email
After I woke this morning, and as usual, I headed to my “office” (that would be the dining room table) to read my mail. I was not prepared for the mail in my work inbox. Not prepared at all.
IBM pads software lineup; Buys ILOG for $340 million
Of course, it didn’t come as a huge surprise. For the past couple of years, we had heard the rumors that it could happen. And now it has.
I have no idea yet what this means to me as an employee, but what it does mean is that somethings are going to change… I’ve been with ILOG since I finished my PhD over eleven years ago. Back then it was a much smaller company of about 250 people worldwide. I was interviewed by the president of the US corporation. The founder and CEO chatted with me and asked for a copy of my thesis. The company has grown since then, but still has a lot of small company characteristics that I love. Will this change? Probably, but only time will tell.
As for IBM, I guess it is in the blood. My parents met at IBM over forty years ago.

Oh, wow! What a morning! I hope it only means good changes, although these things can take a while to settle…
I am hoping for good changes for you too. My brothers company was just bought out. And he had fabulous changes – he doens’t have to pay for health insurance anymore – the company covers it completely. And he was bumped from 10 days vacation to 23. And they are going to hire more people. I am envious of that vacation time he’s going to get. Wish Michael got more!
Allison — it will take quite some time to settle. i’ll go into with a positive attitude and see what the future holds!
kat – as a part time employee, i get zero vacation days. but i do get extremely flexible time. and i would be SO SAD to lose that……. it is what makes it possible for us to do all that we do. i cannot be confined to an office or someone else’s schedule!
