Travel Tuesday: Weekly Highlights for 22 Feb 2011

A weekend spent picking up our new roadtripping vehicle and camping at the beach in Myrtle Beach was just what I needed! But now we’re back home again, and I love what I’ve been reading out there on the web, and I’d love to share my highlights with you.

Here are some of my favorites from the week:

• Restless to Roam: Paris Parks and Thunderstorms
  We love the playgrounds in Paris. I miss our once or twice yearly visits there, but I am so thankful that I was able to take the kids there so often during their toddler years…. And that is a playground we’ve been to a few times and LOVED!

• Toddler on Tour: Our new arrival – the Chariot
  I am enjoying following this family’s preparations for travel and was intrigued by the “anti-motorbike” issues that they face in their own area.

• No Beaten Path: The myth of travel agents
  I can’t remember the last time I used a travel agent other than for work. Except this summer, we used one for our travels within Turkey. Arranging air travel and hotels in Turkey was not as straightforward as what we are used to in traveling in France and the US, somehow. We had a terrible experience with the first one, but then better luck with the second one, after we had detailed exactly where and when we wanted tickets for rail and air.

• WanderMom: Hosteling at Forty
  Ah, my favorite RTW blogger!
  “who would choose to argue with a tween boy in a public corridor about why he needs to take a shower if a room with a private bath is available for only a few extra dollars”
  Ha! So true. My mom and I stayed in hostels in Europe when I was in middle school, and I would love to take a trip like that with one of my kids. But even at our campground this weekend, I felt like an old fart compared to the “boys” who camped across from us (though everyone else there was 75+)….

• Mother of All Trips Mondays are for Dreaming: Spring Break in Provence
  Oh yes, that IS a lovely dream!! I love going to France and, despite our many trips there, I could go again tomorrow. I even dream of living there one day.

• Turkish Muse: Ask and You Shall (Not) Receive
  This cracks me up! Especially since it took me days to realize that Pamukkale and Hierapolis really were one and the same. We had a wonderful time visiting the travertines and ancient ruins there .. more here.

• Worldschool Adventures: Feeling Groovy
  I have come to accept that I don’t fit in with the “true traveling families”. Though the girls and I travel more than anyone I know IRL and we’ve been out of the country to places like Turkey and Japan, we’re not in the league of these RTW families. And that’s okay. We travel within our own limits and desires. No matter, I love reading about and am inspired by other families who completely give up “home” and take to the road.
