listening familiarity
Two weeks ago, I asked for music listening ideas . Last week, I mentioned having trouble finding time to listen.
And, last week, I did find time to listen. While blogging, while on the treadmill, and even while working, amazingly. And learned something about myself, no less. I have known, for a long time, that I rarely like a CD first time through. Given the volume of CDs that have come into our house the past four years (for our kindie radio station and blog, Gooney Bird Kid), I have learned to give CDs at least two spins before forming an opinion. It is quite rare for me to love an album on its first spin, though it has been known to happen.
What I realized (or perhaps realized again) this week is that I can’t listen to an album for the first time while doing anything requiring me to think. I must have a simple brain; it just can’t process new music and other complex thoughts. I CAN drive and listen to new music; this must be why I do my kindie listening in the car.
After listening to a CD while cooking or walking, I can then listen to it (and enjoy it) while working…I wonder if there are others out there like this.
This week, I’ve been listening to Contra from Vampire Weekend, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga from Spoon. Time to add an Avett Bros to the mix…
