Japan Trip, Day 14
We decided to take it slow and skip breakfast this morning. As we headed out, Chloe really wanted to explore the stairs that headed up into the woods. The stairs went up and up and up. Eventually, they hit a road, and we opted to head down the road. Windy, narrow and wet, it didn’t deter cars.
We ended up 50 feet from where we had started. Walking down the slightly bigger road, we ended up at the toy museum, where we stopped to see the toy collection and then go to the hakone Christmas shop. Very surreal. We ate lunch at “Go Go Wimpy”. I had a nice salad, Rob a hamburger and all of us shared fries and onion rings.
Further down the road, we hung out at the river for a long time. Rob and Chloe skipped rocks and scrambled. After a long siesta at the river, we looked for ice cream for Chloe, but didn’t have much luck. Chloe was tired, so we decided to do something bizarre.
Most people take a day trip to Hakone from Tokyo. We decided to take a day trip to Tokyo, thanks to our JR passes. We hopped on a Shinkansen to Tokyo. Chloe took a nice nap. In Tokyo, we got reserved tickets for the train back, then headed out. We walked over to the Imperial gardens in hopes of finding a playground.
I was impressed with how “modern” Tokyo was. Most of the cities we had seen while traveling have big, ugly buildings. Tokyo has some very nice looking large buildings. Very different. We wandered through the parks. The one playground we found was closed. We were all disappointed. We found one swingset. A huge outdoor concert started — very very loud. The girls got some sno-cones.
Back at the Tokyo station, we got sandwiches on fresh French bread. Three train rides later, we were back in the hotel room.

The stairs to the woods sound like a fun adventure, wetness aside. I love Go Go Wimpy as a restaurant name.
Sounds like the rail passes were a really good plan for you guys. How nice that you could just make a quick trip to Tokyo like that!
We went up and up and up. No switchback on mountnain climbing there. Straight up.
The passes are incredible. Amtrak offers a similar program, but it can’t compare to Japan Rail. What a fantastic system!!!
Go go wimpy is too too funny. But that is me with spices ๐ What an amazing trip you all are having…and I am loving having a peek into your adventures! (Because there is no way I would have done those stairs…)
